Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description

A shield shaped gold metal and epoxied device 15/32 (2.94cm) in height blazoned as follows: Argent, a cross couped Gulessur mounted by a representation of a pontoon bridge fesswise Or, in dexter chief an ambulance wheel and in sinister chief, a lamp of knowledge, both of the last. Attached below the shield a maroon scroll inscribed HONOR WITH COMPASSION in gold.



Symbolism

The colors maroon and white are used for units of the U.S. Army Medical Department. The cross is a symbol of service and physical care; it refers to the organizations mission of medical support. The pontoon bridge was used during WWII by the 188th Medical Battalion at the Roer River crossing site in Germany. The wheel refers to the 472ndMotor Ambulance Co. which moved with the 188th five times during its campaign participation for Rhineland. The lamp of learning is a symbol of the Army Medical Professional Training Brigade.
